My subject matter is diverse. I enjoy realism as a matter of technical skill but I also take liberties with the use of light, color and shadow. The narrative can be ambiguous, contextual, symbolic or an observation.
Landscapes:
At some point during the process, my landscapes begin to develop their own distinct characteristics, deviating from the initial reference. It is fun to bring the foreground as close to the viewer as possible and pushing the horizon line back as far back as I can while keeping the integrity of the composition. I do this using color, shadow, brushstrokes and texture.
Still Life:
The surprise of seeing ordinary objects out of context can make a still life more interesting. I am especially attracted to working with the nostalgia of the 50's and 60's; things like my roller skates, gum ball machine, rotary phones, percolators, as well as iconic figures and signage.
Drawing:
I like the sensuality and the expressiveness of the female form, especially in motion. Studies of eyes, faces and hands also tell the human story. Equestrian art has been a life long fascination as I love riding relationship.
Sketches and studies are offered as works in progress, an integral part of the process.
